Can a Property Tax Appeal Lower Your Bill?

Josephine and Jackson County tax statements arrive by October 25, and each one shows two values for your property: real market value and assessed value. Your tax is figured on assessed value, the lower of the two for most homes. Before you hand an appeal service a share of your savings, find out whether an appeal can move your bill at all.

How Oregon’s two values work

Under Measure 50, assessed value can grow at most 3% a year, while real market value follows the market. For a home owned a decade or more, real market value usually sits well above assessed value. An appeal changes real market value, so it lowers your tax when the corrected market value drops below your assessed value.

What your free Tax Appeal Check includes

  • Your real market value and assessed value from the county record, side by side.
  • A clear answer on whether an appeal can lower your bill this year.
  • When it can: comparable sales from around January 1, the date the county values every property, adjusted in dollars for size, condition, lot, and upgrades, with a market value opinion you can file.
  • The filing steps and deadlines: the assessor’s informal review, and the Property Value Appeals Board petition due December 31.

Appeal services like Ownwell keep 25% or more of what you save. This check is free, you file your own appeal, and you keep every dollar of the savings.
